  3. tablets; later, folded sheets of parchment
  4. were attached to the boards, then bound
  5. together. The name `codex' was used for all 
  6. large works, collections of history,
  7. philosophy, poetry, and during the Roman
  8. Empire designated collections of laws. During
  9. the 2nd century AD codices began to replace
  10. the earlier rolls. They were widely used by
  11. the medieval Christian church to keep
  12. records, from about 1200 onwards. Various
  13. codices record Mexican Indian civilizations
  14. just after the time of the Spanish Conquest
  15. about 1520. The Codex Juris Canonici/Code of
  16. Canon Law is the body of laws governing the
  17. Roman Catholic Church since 1918.
